COVID-19 and Social Distancing in Schools

Educators across the country are struggling to keep students socially distanced in classrooms, transitions, buses, and cafeterias.  The term socially distanced for schools is referring to individuals maintaining at least 6 feet in distance from the next individual.  Public schools in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to practice social distancing given the amount of space in classrooms, hallways, buses and cafeterias.  The CDC recently adjusted their suggested distance to 3 feet to accommodate schools as they attempt to follow COVID-19 protocols. The CDC still suggests the 6 feet distance when feasible.  Research suggests 3 feet to be as safe as 6 feet when mask-wearing is enforced.  Many schools require students and staff to wear masks at all times accept when eating and participating in physical activities during Physical Education class and athletic practices.

Tips for Families

·       Talk to your child about COVID-19 and best practices.

·       Provide your child with extra masks, hand-sanitizer and wipes in their book bag.

·       Remind your child to wash their hands throughout the day while at school.

·       Remind your child to remain distanced when socializing, eating lunch and in closed areas

on campus.

·       Encourage your child to alert you if they are exhibiting symptoms that are consistent with COVID-19.

·       Keep your child isolated and quarantined if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.

·       It is recommended to take a COVID-19 test if anyone is demonstrating symptoms that are consistent with the novel virus.

·       There are millions of COVID-19 vaccines available to Americans across the country.  The CDC recommends all Americans to be tested and vaccinated as soon as possible.

Please visit the CDC website and the website of your local health department to learn more about COVID-19 and best practices.
